During his career, Paul has worked on a wide range of projects from large to small scale covering developments spanning from residential and mixed use, employment and industrial, retail and commercial, transport, drainage and recreation.

Expertise

Paul has extensive skills in masterplanning, flood defence and river restoration, public open space and green infrastructure, detailed design and scheme implementation.  He is experienced in preparing landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIA) and acts as an expert witness in public inquiries.

Project Experience

Paul is experienced in Masterplanning particularly of large scale strategic urban expansions and for other major developments, either leading the design or as part of a team.

The work may cover: initial survey and analysis of landscape character and visibility with preparation of an LVIA; identification of environmental and other constraints and opportunities; development of green infrastructure and landscape strategies. Design may include Public Open Space, sports, play and recreation areas, SuDS and watercourses, access routes, street and other planting and hard landscape palette. When leading, Paul designs the built fabric layout and is the design co-ordinator with other disciplines.

Some projects include the detailed design for planning and construction, and Paul has detailed hard and soft landscape design and tender documentation expertise. This includes street furniture, paths and pavings, play areas, walls and structures, lighting and signage. Paul uses his deep knowledge of trees, shrubs, herbaceous and native flora in planting designs.  He prepares landscape management plans. He has particular skills in flood defence schemes and river restoration. His site construction and contract administration experience make him both knowledgeable and pragmatic in delivering projects on the ground.

Paul understands the planning system and has acted as an expert landscape witness with some notable wins! His thoroughly understands the complimentary skills within the specialisms of the company, and has contact networks including architects, planners, engineers and heritage experts makes him a valuable team player. He can support or project manage and has insight into the issues affecting others leading to positive design and strategy outcomes.  Working with many types of clients, he works to understand their objectives and issues and appreciates the economics and politics of projects.

Some key example projects undertaken include:

  • Lead masterplanning for application for 1,750 homes Gainsborough, Lincs; 180 home development in Bedworth, Warwickshire; mixed use development in Newton Abbot, Devon.
  • Support to masterplaning and detailed landscape design for 5,500 homes, North Swindon; 1,650 and mixed-use homes in Plymstock, Devon; 1,900 homes in Brockworth, Glos.
  • Flood defence schemes in Roath, Cardiff; Haydon Wick, Swindon.

Career History

  • 1990 Bell Fischer Associates. Landscape design supporting planning applications.
  • 1984 - 1990 Thamesdown Borough Council, Swindon. Design and construction of public open spaces including play areas, a 10 acre lake, grounds and gardens to care homes grounds and community centre. Preparation of strategic green frameworks for urban expansion areas. Support to the planning officer for planning applications.
  • 1983 - 1984 Atkins Sheppard Fidler Associates. Landscape design for a new town in Saudi Arabia; detailed designs for small scale urban projects.
  • 1980 - 1981 Hackney Borough Council - Year Out Landscape Architect. Various projects for housing and public open spaces.
