Freshford Mill

Clients: Surrey & Counties and Meadowcroft as landowners Ypres Rose as developers

Location: Freshford, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire

Freshford Mill on the outskirts of Freshford, near Bradford on Avon, prospered as a clothier's mill in the 17th and 18th centuries but had been derelict since ceasing to house a rubber factory in the 1990s. Development proposals comprise refurbishment of the core historic buildings together with high quality new residential development.

Proposals were prepared for restoration of the original buildings with new residential and studio apartments. The site represented a number of challenges for redevelopment being in the Green Belt, within a flood plain and contaminated by previous uses and also having a colony of lesser horseshoe bats, with other bat species also recorded locally. Bats are nationally protected and we undertook surveys and prepared a management strategy which was approved by Natural England to preserve the habitats on site and create a new bat roost.  Landscape design appropriate to the historic setting was prepared.
