A beautiful new foot/cycle bridge over the canal in Bathampton has received planning consent. We provided landscape and ecological consultancy services for the project on behalf of The Bathampton Conker Crossing community group.
The need for the bridge resulted from community concerns regarding the provision of a safer route to the primary school, to avoid the need to cross the existing ‘humpback’ road bridge.
The site location is very sensitive due to a combination of designations. These include a Conservation Area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and designated Green Belt. Other issues included mature trees, ecological constraints as well as existing access and circulation.
As part of the project team we undertook Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and Ecological Surveys and appraisal. We also designed the approach paths and ramps to ensure the proposals were integrated into the context and minimised impacts to existing trees.
The proposed solution is designed by Format Engineers. It comprises a beautifully engineered, contemporary, sinuous bridge design, using weathered steel. Now that planning consent has been granted, the proposals will be progressed to detail design.
We were pleased to provide our consultancy services to The Bathampton Conker Crossing group as part of our commitment to support our local community.
