Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area (ASEA) Ecology Mitigation and Flood Defence Project has been selected as one of 12 project finalists for this years ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards . The project provides 17km of tidal flood defence along the Severn Estuary, reducing the risk of tidal flooding for 2,500 homes and businesses.
The flood defence project is being delivered by the Environment Agency in partnership with Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council and BAM Nutall Mott Mac Donald JV.
Construction began in 2020 and includes a series of raised embankments, sheet piled walls, in situ concrete walls and precast reinforced concrete walls.
Integral to the project is the creation of over 80 hectares of new wetland habitat providing ecological mitigation to support the areas internationally important wildlife species. New wetland habitats with extensive areas of species rich grassland, scrapes, ponds and tree planting have been created at Northwick and Hallen Marsh to attract a variety of waders and ducks. Across the project a combined total of two hectares of native tree species have been planted including large areas of native shrubs and woodland.
The scheme will also create improved walking routes along the shores of the Severn Estuary.
Nicholas Pearson Associates have been working alongside Binnies UK Limited, as part of the supervision team to monitor the implementation of the scheme
