Wildfire Mitigation Design for New Development

With wildfires breaking out in this hot and dry summer, it is a salutary reminder that in the UK wildfire likelihood and severity is set to increase due to climate change. Assessment and mitigation of present hazards and adaptation to future challenges is vital for any large development in high risk areas. It is also a requirement of The Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017.

Nicholas Pearson Associates has prepared a design and management plan for a large area of Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) incorporating combined wildfire prevention measures, recreational use, wildlife habitat and forestry management as part of the Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut, redevelopment for residential development. The plan was prepared by a team comprising a landscape architect, ecologist and forester with specialist knowledge of wildfires.

The Pirbright Military Ranges, which lie adjacent to the site, have suffered two significant wildfire incidents, the largest in the South East of England. In both 2003 and 2010, over 800 hectares was burnt causing considerable local disruption to key services and infrastructure.

The scheme is now being implemented by Skanska IS.
