New shared space for City of Bath

Bath’s Seven Dials has recently been transformed into a vibrant civic space, showcasing ‘Shared Space’ principles to rebalance the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in this area of the City.

The scheme was designed by NPA, with Mott MacDonald engineers, through the Council’s Bath Transport Package and was constructed by North Midland Construction.

The scheme enhances the city’s public realm and encourages courtesy between drivers and other users. Consultations on the design were held with the public and key stakeholders including visual-impairment charities.

The centre point of the design references the historic ‘West Gate’ of the medieval city which later became the confluence of seven distinct routes under the Georgian expansion of the City. Today, Seven Dials remains a busy hub within the city’s entertainment quarter. The new works provide a fitting legacy to the past whilst meeting the needs of a modern city.
