Environmental Statement submitted for Melksham Link canal project

The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust have submitted a revised planning application to Wiltshire Council for their proposed Melksham Link canal waterway, accompanied by an Environmental Statement.

The Melksham Link project aims to reinstate a canal link from the Kennet & Avon Canal at Semington to the River Avon in Melksham town centre. A 3km towpath/cycleway recreational route, ten bridges, and new access roads for Berryfield are also proposed as well as recreational, landscape and ecological mitigation and enhancements.

The planning application was originally submitted in 2012 but an ES was required by Wiltshire Council in order to assess the effects on wildlife, the landscape, water, soils and agriculture, and the historic environment. Wiltshire Council is expected to make a decision later in the year.

We prepared the ES, and carried out both the Landscape and Visual and Ecological Impact Assessments.
