2017 Green Apple Environment Award for Cannington Somerset Flood Defence

Cannington village in Somerset has a long history of flooding from the Cannington Brook. In November 2012, more than 40 homes were flooded twice within a matter of days. Construction work on a new Environment Agency flood defence began in April 2016 and finished in early 2017. The scheme includes a flood relief channel over 1 km long and 17m wide, and 1km of the existing brook was widened.

Working as part of the multi disciplinary Team Van Ord, Nicholas Pearson Associates co-ordinated the environmental design and prepared landscape plans to integrate the engineering scheme into the receiving landscape, maximising the design opportunities within the site. Existing quality trees, hedgerows, wildlife habitats and archaeology were protected and retained where possible to maintain an established landscape character.

The Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation, an international, non-profit, non-political, independent, environment group, dedicated to recognizing, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice in the built environment.
