The Ministry of Defence has recently announced another major sell-off of land around the country, with a further 56 sites to be disposed of by 2040, including Stonehouse barracks and the Citadel in Plymouth, Norton Manor Camp, Taunton and Chivenor, Devon. The Government’s target is to release land with housing potential for 55,000 new homes.
The Government acknowledges it faces challenges in achieving planning permissions to enable the development of these sites.
Whilst considered to be ‘brownfield’ sites, former MoD sites can be environmentally sensitive. Working on former MoD sites in Bath we responded to challenges associated with the World Heritage Site, AONB and Conservation Area. The redevelopment of Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut, Surrey, and Penhale Training Camp, Cornwall, have required detailed consideration of ecological effects on SSSIs and European designated sites.
Our multi-disciplinary teams work together to guide the sensitive development of sites to create attractive, accessible and well managed environments for residents to enjoy, to improve environmental outcomes, and to add value to new developments.
