The Dyson School of Design and Innovation was aimed at providing design and engineering skills for students from 14 to 19 years old. The project, in Bath, was to be the first of its type in UK, as an exemplar, aiming to emulate the creative spirit of the young generation.

The brownfield site was located adjacent to the River Avon within the Bath World Heritage Site. During the project the remaining structures were designated as Listed Buildings due to their industrial architectural value. Key issues related to the requirement for a high quality approach to the built form and public realm, including sensitive works to the river wall and river edge and the incorporation of a new footbridge over the Avon.

A carefully considered design sought to balance the requirements of the school with the site constraints. The outcome was a strong and bold design proposal that reflected the heritage of the site and the scheme’s forward looking aspirations.

Nicholas Pearson Associates was part of the multi disciplinary team that included Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Buro Happold and provided landscape, ecological and environmental planning advice and inputs to the project.
