Location: Oettingen, Germany

The German town of Oettingen, Bavaria, has been the family seat of the Oettingen Spielbergs since the 14th century. The Castle and grounds were dedicated to the town in the mid 20th century, and the family moved into the nearby Orangery, which stands within a 19th century working estate designed in the English style.

For the past twenty years, Nicholas Pearson Associates have been re- designing this parkland garden, and have introduced a series of new gardens and outdoor spaces to reflect the family's interests and aspirations. These new spaces, designed both in classical and contemporary style, include a large Potager garden, a Library Garden, terraces, new avenues, a Rhododendron garden, courtyards for the Guest Houses, and creation of a lake and pleasure grounds.

Subtle and adventurous outdoor illumination has been created by leading lighting designer Bruce Munro. The latest design component being realised is the Castle Courtyard, which will be surfaced in local stone, and centred on a spectacular fountain.
