Hayesfield School's new sports and performing arts development was officially opened by Amy Williams on Friday 6 May 2011. The £9 million project redesigned half of the school site and includes a new building which incorporates a full size sports hall, a 200 seat performance space, associated music, changing and classrooms and a new canteen and kitchen. External sports facilities include a new all weather multi sports pitch and netball courts as well as enhancements to the surrounding landscape for improved access, circulation and educational use.

The site is located within the World Heritage Site and Conservation Area of Bath and comprises a mature and attractive landscape of mature trees together with a significant fall of 15m across the site.

We played an important role throughout the project, with early landscape and ecological inputs to identify key design and planning constraints which informed the site layout and design process. We were involved in the public consultation, managed arboricultural inputs, designed the external realm, had some key inputs into elements of the built form, and prepared the photomontages which played an important part in the planning application package which successfully gained consent under delegated powers.

Key elements of the external design comprised carefully considered landform and site levels to integrate the building with the landscape and provide good external access and circulation, a series of linked external spaces around the building to provide attractive entrance areas, outdoor seating and classroom spaces and a biodiverse planting design which will provide year round interest. Also included in the design was a substantial native oak tree to replace a declining mature tree that had to be removed as part of the development.

We had an ongoing role in preparing tender and construction information and assisting the contractor through the implementation phase. We also provided ecological monitoring during the project and inputs to the BREEAM process.
