“an elegant, slender bridge… minimising its impact on the scenery”
Concrete Society Award, 2009.

Boscastle is one of many picturesque and important tourist destinations on the North Cornwall Coast. Following the devastating floods in 2004, the Environment Agency had to carry out flood risk improvements to the rivers which meet in the core of the lower part of the village.

Nicholas Pearson Associates were appointed to provide input into the appraisal of options and undertake landscape and visual impact assessments prior to developing a viable scheme and providing detailed design advice. Our graphic design and visualisations services were used extensively during the public consultation, for planning applications and public information/interpretation during the construction phase.

The work was carried out within a highly sensitive built and natural environment and close cooperation between the local community and key stakeholders – including the National Trust and South West Water - was central to the success of the scheme.

Our design, incorporating a contemporary bridge and attractive linear public space surrounding the river has contributed to the economic regeneration of the village.
