Greenwich Peninsula Inter-tidal Terraces

Client:  English Partnerships with W S Atkins

Location: Greenwich, London

As part of the sustainable regeneration of the Greenwich peninsula in London, we  provided ecological inputs to the design of new river walls. Where river defence required refurbishment, an alternative was sought to the typical sheet-piled solutions that have removed most edge habitat from the tidal Thames.

The proposal involved cutting down the original river wall to a varying residual height and creating a new defence as a simple cantilever concrete wall set back some 7 to 10 metres from the former wall. In this way intertidal terraces were created.

In close liaison with the Environment Agency, a design emerged, based on the signature of residual saltmarsh habitats elsewhere on the tideway. The scheme has been implemented to the approval of the Environment Agency and other interested organisations.
